Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The modern GT500 has appeared in two main eras. The S197 generation (2007–2014) revived the badge with a supercharged 5.4-litre V8, later growing to a 5.8-litre unit. The current S550 GT500 (2020–2022) is the definitive version: a track-focused halo car with aggressive aero, carbon-fibre options and the strongest engine Ford has ever put in a Mustang.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The 2020–2022 GT500 uses the 5.2-litre supercharged 'Predator' V8 producing 760 hp and 847 Nm — a cross-plane crank version of the GT350's flat-plane engine, topped by a 2.65-litre Eaton supercharger.

Trim levels and variants

The GT500 is a two-door fastback coupe only. Key options define the car: the Handling Package, the Carbon Fiber Track Package (carbon wheels, adjustable wing, deleted rear seat) and the Golden Ticket / Heritage appearance packs. Recaro seats, MagneRide adaptive dampers and the Track Pack aero are common.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

Availability is limited by production numbers but steady, with cars spread across the enthusiast belt — the Southeast, Texas, California and the Midwest.

When importing makes sense

Importing a used GT500 suits enthusiasts who want a genuine supercharged American muscle flagship with real track hardware, not a badge.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

The Predator V8 is strong, but a hard-driven GT500 generates serious heat, so the priority is a car that was allowed to cool properly and serviced on schedule. Known points to check: transmission cooling and dual-clutch behaviour under repeated launches, supercharger belt and coupler condition, and the many heat exchangers up front for leaks or track debris.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US cars run amber side markers, mph-only speedometers and typically no rear fog lamp.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Expect to fit or activate a rear fog lamp, correct the headlight pattern, convert the speedometer to km/h and confirm the odometer reads in kilometres.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Ford Shelby GT500?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Is the GT500 available with a manual?

The 2020–2022 car is automatic-only; the older S197 GT500 used a six-speed manual.

How powerful is the current GT500?

The 5.2-litre supercharged V8 makes 760 hp.

What mileage is typical for an import?

Many collector cars show 5,000–30,000 miles, though higher-mileage examples exist.

Are track-used cars a concern?

Yes; check heat exchangers, brakes and tyres, and prefer a documented, gently used car.

Can it pass TÜV?

Yes, with lighting changes, a km/h cluster and an individual approval.

Can USCar Trader source a specific spec?

Yes, as a broker we locate and vet the exact colour and package you want.
